NO. 10 FLORIDA 14, NO. 7 LOYOLA 11
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Florida lacrosse team used a fourth-quarter spurt to overcome the seventh-ranked Loyola Greyhounds 14-11 on Saturday afternoon at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
The Gators improve to 4-2 on the year and hand Loyola its first loss of the season, moving them to 5-1.
Florida picks up its second win against a team ranked in the IWLCA/ILWomen Top-25 poll this season.
The Gators’ offensive effort was led by two three-goal performances from Emily Heller and Maggi Hall. Paisley Eagan, Danielle Pavinelli and Ava Tighe followed with two goals apiece, including Eagan’s game-tying goal. Ashley Gonzalez and Madison Waters each added one goal on the afternoon.
Gonzalez dished out a team-high three assists in the victory, followed by one apiece from Eagan and Pavinelli.
Heller led the way with the draw circle, coming up with five, while four Gators each registered one draw control on the day.
Florida held Loyola to 11-of-27 shooting on the afternoon and caused a total of 10 team turnovers. Becky Browndorf and Eagan each tallied a team-high two caused turnovers to secure the win for Florida.
Heller and Browndorf each also recorded three groundballs to lead the way for the Gators, followed by Pavinelli’s two.
Sarah Reznick was lights out in the cage, coming up with 11 saves and a .500 save percentage in the win. After the first half, she allowed just four goals in the final 30 minutes of play.
The Gators are right back in action on Tuesday when the team hosts the Colgate Raiders. Opening draw is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Donald R. Dizney Stadium and the game can also be streamed on ESPN+.
NO. 8 JAMES MADISON 17, NO. 23 JOHNS HOPKINS 10
HARRISONBURG, Va. – A 9-0 run in the final 19:35 lifted No. 8 James Madison lacrosse to its seventh straight victory, fending off a challenge from No. 23 Johns Hopkins 17-10 at Sentara Park on Saturday.
Saturday’s victory improved JMU to 7-1 while Johns Hopkins dropped to 3-4.
Redshirt junior Isabella Peterson scored seven goals and added and assists for eight points in total. Two other Dukes added hat tricks in Tai Jankowski and Brianna Mennella, as Mennella marked her first hat trick of her career.
The Dukes’ offense moved the ball to the tune of nine assists with four each from Katelyn Morgan and Jankowski. Combined with her three goals, Jankowski totaled seven points, which tied her career high.
Away from the attack, the defense held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final 22:13 of the contest. Rachel Matey caused a pair of turnovers and led the Dukes with seven draw controls. Midfielder Lizzy Fox added four ground balls, as Dukes totaled at least 20 for the third time this season.
For Johns Hopkins, Ava Angello, Abbey Hurlbrink and Jordan Carr each scored twice while Annie Marshall led the Blue Jays with seven draw controls.
UMBC 11, TEMPLE 10 (OT)
PHILADELPHIA – Temple lacrosse (5-3, 0-0 AAC) dropped to UMBC (5-2, 0-0 America East) on Saturday, 11-10 in a tight overtime matchup at Howarth Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Grollman had a career-best day in goal, recording 10 saves.
Maddie Barber tallied both her first career goal and first career assist in the matchup.
Grollman posted a career-best ten saves on 24 shots for a .476 save percentage.
Gabrielle Kirsch recorded her first assist of 2023, finding Schickling for the Cherry and White's seventh goal of the game.
FURMAN 9, OLD DOMINION 8
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse (3-6) team fell to the Furman Paladins on Saturday, 9-8. Sydney Taylor led the Monarchs offensively scoring three goals.
Furman jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Taylor got the Monarchs on the board. The Paladins added one more goal making it 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Furman scored first in the second quarter giving them a 5-1 lead, but ODU responded with three unanswered goals to end the half. Jayme Weber found a cutting Jeslyn Krebs for the goal, Weber would cut into that lead when she scored a goal of her own. Moira Olexa scored the final goal of the second quarter as the Monarchs went into halftime trailing 5-4.
Furman started the third quarter with two quick goals making it 7-4 before Taylor assisted Olivia Tanneberger on a goal. The Paladins added one more goal in the quarter and went into the fourth quarter leading 8-5.
ODU cut into the lead when Taylor ripped a shot into the back of the net, but Furman responded with a goal of their own. ODU didn’t shy away as Taylor scored her third goal of the game making it 9-7. Furman’s Caroline Swain received a yellow card with 42 seconds left which gave Danielle Dundas a free position shot that she slotted into the back of the net. In the final 40 seconds the Monarchs had an opportunity to tie the game being a man up but wouldn’t be able to find the back of the net and Furman held on to win.
