Vanderbilt, JMU and Temple Take Wins on Wednesday

VANDERBILT 10, PENN STATE 9
NASHVILE, Tenn. —
Vanderbilt lacrosse topped Penn State, 10-9, on Wednesday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. Five Dores scored goals, led by fifth-year Bri Gross who registered for her second hat trick of the season.

Penn State earned the opening draw and transitioned into a quick goal in the opening seconds of the game but the Gross responded less than a minute later with the equalizer. Gross added another goal for the Dores to put them up 2-1 at the halfway point of the quarter. The Nittany Lions responded with a goal from Meghan Murray to even the score but back-to-back goals from Josie Ward put the Dores on top at the end of the opening period 4-2.

Gross found the back of the cage for her third goal of the day pushing Vandy to a 5-2 lead. PSU responded with back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the half to bring its deficit within one but Paige Finneran beat the buzzer for a goal at the end of the half, putting Vanderbilt up 6-4 at the break.

The Commodores carried that momentum into the second half, opening the third quarter with three straight goals from Ellie Hilsabeck, Finneran and Kemper Robinson extending to a 9-4 lead. Penn State responded by closing the gap and outscoring Vandy 5-0 to tie the game.

Robinson scored the go ahead at the 5:35 mark of the fourth quarter for the Dores, as the shot clock expired to put Vanderbilt up 10-9 and sealing the victory.

Paige Gunning had a season-high 15 saves in the game.


NO. 8 JAMES MADISON 13, LIBERTY 5
LYNCHBURG, Va. –
No. 8 James Madison lacrosse scored the final seven goals of the game to clinch its sixth-straight victory, a 13-5 triumph at Liberty on Wednesday.
 
The Dukes improved to 6-1 on the campaign while Liberty fell to 1-4.
 
Redshirt junior Isabella Peterson scored five goals for her fifth hat trick of the season and added six draw controls, marking game highs for both statistics. Maddie Epke, Tai Jankowski and Lizzy Fox each scored twice, with Epke adding three draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball on her birthday. Katelyn Morgan dished out four assists as JMU assisted on 10 of its 13 scores.
 
The Dukes’ defense allowed its fewest goals of the season and marked its sixth straight game holding opponents to single-digit goals. Mairead Durkin marked a big day in the stat sheet, totaling seven hustle points with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Kat Buchanan made another six saves on a .545 save percentage, adding three ground balls.
 
For the Flames, Jordan Shieve scored a pair of goals while goalkeeper Mara Tellers made 11 saves.
 

TEMPLE 14, MARIST 10
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
Temple lacrosse (5-2, 0-0 AAC) posted their fifth win of the season on Wednesday, rolling past Marist (2-3, 0-0 MAAC), 14-10 at Tenney Stadium. With her fourth draw control of the day, Belle Mastropietro broke the all-time draw control record at Temple, which was previously set at 236 in 2021. 

Maeve Tobin kickstarted the day for the Owls, netting the opening goal just over a minute into play.  Marist answered back, but Julie Schickling found her first of the day, finishing off an Amelia Wright dish to put the Owls back in front. 

Camryn Zavacky found back-to-back goals, closing out the first quarter and opening the second to advance the Owl lead to 4-1. 

Mastropietro found goal number five and six, capitalizing off a dodge, followed by a Mackenzie Roth assist before Erin King found a goal of her own. 

Marist attempted to split the momentum, finding their second goal of the day, but a three-goal run from Temple was in store. 

Tobin, Schickling and Roth all found goals to put the Cherry and White up 10-2. 

The Red Foxes finished on a buzzer beater in the final seconds of the half, ending it 10-3. 
An offensive burst from Marist led to a three-goal run to start the third quarter, but Wright stepped in, netting an Owl goal to swing the momentum back towards Temple. 

Mastropietro opened the final 15 minutes with a goal, followed by Tobin, who continued to build on that momentum, finding her third and final goal of the day. 

The Red Foxes looked for opportunity, finding a goal with seven minutes left, but Mastropietro immediately put one in the back of the net for the Cherry and White. 


RICHMOND 20, OLD DOMINION 7
NORFOLK, Va. –
 The Old Dominion Women’s lacrosse (3-5) team fell to the Richmond Spiders on Wednesday, 20-7. Moira Olexa led the Monarchs offensively scoring three goals.  
 
The Monarchs took the lead 30 seconds into the game when Olexa ripped a shot into the back of the net. That would be the only time the Monarchs led on the day as Richmond would score seven unanswered goals to end the first quarter.  
 
Starting the second quarter Richmond made it an 8-1 game with a goal. ODU answered with two goals from Olexa to make it 8-3. The Spiders took a 9-3 lead before Molly May scored on a pass from Sydney Taylor. Two Minutes later Olivia Tanneberger took a pass from Taylor and found the back of the net. Richmond scored making it 10-5 with 36 seconds left in the half, ODU trimmed the lead when May scored with eight seconds left making the score 10-6 at the half.  
 
The second half was dominated by the Spiders as they added seven goals in the third quarter. Katie McGrain would score the lone goal for the Monarchs in the fourth quarter making it 18-7, Richmond would add two more goals and held on to win 20-7. 
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 12 p.m. when they host Furman at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
