HOUSTON – After a record-setting season, University of Houston senior guard Marcus Sasser received the Jerry West Award on Saturday afternoon.

The Jerry West Award is presented annually to the nation's top shooting guard.

Sasser became the first Cougar to receive the award in the program's history

This was only the latest postseason award for Sasser. On Saturday, he was named one of five finalists for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's and was a member of the 10-man Wooden Award All-American Team.

He previously was named a First-Team All-American by Associated Press, USBWA, NABC
Second-Team honoree from Sporting News, Stadium and Field of 68.

Sasser became Houston's first Consensus First-Team All-American since Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon in 1983.

After electrifying Houston fans with his decision to return for his senior season in June 2022, Sasser lived up to the preseason hype.

He led the Cougars and ranked ninth in the American Athletic Conference with 16.8 points per game and stood among the league's Top-15 leaders in assists (3.1 apg, 14th), free throw percentage (84.8, 5th), 3-point field goal percentage (38.4, 8th), 3-point field goals per game (2.7, t-4th) and assist-turnover ratio (1.95, 5th).

The Dallas native posted 13 20-point games this season, including a career-best 31 points against South Florida on Jan. 11, with a team-high 31 double-digit scoring games.

However, Sasser did far more than shoot and score for the Cougars, ranking seventh in the league with 1.6 steals per game.

Sasser became the 50th 1,000-point scorer in Houston history earlier this season and finished 15th among the Cougars' career scoring leaders with 1,458points.

He also drained 276 3-pointers on 748 attempts during his career, setting Houston records in both categories.

For his impressive efforts, Sasser was recognized as The American Player of the Year and was a unanimous choice by the league head coaches for the First Team.
