MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team was victorious in the annual W.S. Babe Howard Classic at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday night, defeating UT Martin 4-2. The win marked the 10th-straight for the Tigers over the Skyhawks dating back to 2011.
Back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning by RJ Jimerson and Cameron Benson sparked Memphis (21-20) for its first run of the game. A well-placed sac-bunt by Shane Cox moved both runners into scoring position for Brayland Skinner, who drove in Jimerson with a sac-fly to center field to put the Tigers up 1-0.
Solo home runs for the Skyhawks in the third and fourth innings gave them a brief 2-1 lead over the Tigers.
Memphis responded with a three-run fourth inning to jump back into the lead. The Tigers got their first run of the frame when Benson stole second base, and Logan Kohler, who was occupying third base, took off for home and scored on the throw down to second. Then, a two-out, two-run single by catcher Brennan DuBose brought in Benson and Skinner to give Memphis a 4-2 lead – a score that proved final.
