IRVING, Texas – Florida and James Madison have earned national seeds and will host first- and second-round games in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
The Gators clinched their 12th straight NCAA tournament appearance by claiming The American’s automatic bid Saturday, while the Dukes were selected to the NCAA Championship for the 19th time.
This year’s tournament will mark the first time that The American will have two of the eight national seeds in the 29-team field. The American and the ACC are the only conferences to have at least two national seeds.
Florida (16-3) earned the No. 6 seed in the bracket and will face Jacksonville Friday at 4 p.m. at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville. A win would send the Gators to a second-round matchup against either Mercer or Notre Dame.
Florida was a 16-11 winner against Jacksonville April 26 and defeated Mercer 15-6 March 22. The Gators eliminated both teams from last year’s NCAA tournament on their way to the quarterfinal round.
James Madison (17-2), which saw a 17-game winning streak snapped by Florida in Saturday’s American Athletic Conference Championship final, will be the No. 7 seed and will open tournament play Friday against Army at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Dukes would face either Maryland or Drexel in a second-round matchup.
James Madison, which won the 2018 NCAA title, will make its eighth consecutive NCAA appearance. The Dukes defeated Maryland 8-7 in a March 1 regular-season matchup.
