TULSA, Okla. -- Cardell Williams passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 90 yards and a score as Tulsa took a 48-26 win against Temple in both teams' American Athletic Conference opener Thursday night at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Williams completed 14 of 17 passes, including. a pair of touchdown passes to Marquis Shoulders that staked the Golden Hurricane to a 21-3 lead going into halftime.
Tulsa reeled of 533 yards of total offense as the Golden Hurricane churned out 289 rushing yards in addition to Williams' 244 passing yards.
Tulsa scored on five of its first six drives in the second half, including Williams' 22-yard touchdown run with 4:58 left that gave the hosts a 48-18 lead.
Temple was kept out of the end zone until Sam Martin's 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. Owls quarterback E.J. Warner threw two second-half TD passes and finished with 269 yards on 27-of-49 passing.
Anthony Watkins rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Tulsa, which improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in The American. Shoulders had five receptions for 76 yards, while Devan Williams had four catches for 75 yards and a TD.
