IRVING, Texas – Tulane football's Makhi Hughes and Shadre Hurst have been named as 2023 FWAA Freshman All-America selections presented by Chris Doering Mortgage.
Hughes, a running back, led the American Athletic Conference in rushing with 1,378 yards while also scoring seven rushing touchdowns in 14 games in 2023. He was previously named All-AAC First Team, the league's Rookie of the Year, an Honorable Mention All-American by the College Football Network (CFN), All-State by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LWSA) and a Freshman All-American by The Athletic.
Hughes ran for 100 or more yards in seven games including a career-high 166 yards against UTSA. Hughes' 1,378 yards placed him fourth all-time at Tulane in a single season and was a school freshman record.
Hurst played in all 14 games with 10 starts at guard in 2023, helping Tulane total 5,181 yards of total offense. The program also scored 41 touchdowns. The team scored over 20 points in 12 times and over 30 points in six contests with a high of 37 against South Alabama.
Tulane was one of six schools to have multiple FWAA Freshman All-America picks along with Oklahoma (2), Florida (2), Miami (2), Clemson (2) and Georgia (3).
