Temple, East Carolina and No. 3 James Madison all improved to 2-0 to start the young season after they scored convincing wins Wednesday. Cincinnati and Old Dominion came up short against nationally ranked opponents in their respective contests.
TEMPLE 15, BINGHAMTON 6
PHILADELPHIA - Three players netted hat tricks as the Temple women's lacrosse team took an 15-6 win over Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls improved to 2-0 with the win.
Julie Schickling tied a career high with four goals, leading all players. Belle Mastropietro and Amelia Wright scored three goals apiece, and Mackenzie Roth posted six points (2 G, 4 A). Katie Shallow anchored the defense with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Binghamton scored first at the 9:22 mark, holding the lead until back-to-back goals by Mastropietro and Wright put the Owls up 2-1 before the end of the first quarter.
Temple would build on these goals, embarking on an 11-0 run from the end of the first through the first ten minutes of the third.
Schickling secured her hat trick in the second, scoring three times as the Owls extended their lead to 8-1 at halftime. The Temple defense held Binghamton to just one shot in the second quarter.
Mastropietro, Roth, and Schickling each scored early in the third before the Bearcats responded with two of their own. The Owls added four more in the fourth, with Sabrina Martin and Emily Liberio each scoring their first goals of the season.
EAST CAROLINA 17, GARDNER-WEBB 6
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina lacrosse team took down the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 17-6 on Wednesday afternoon in Johnson Stadium. The Pirates used a 16-2 run starting in the second quarter to break the game open and roll on to victory.
The Pirates (2-0) got off to a sluggish start for the second game in a row, trailing 3-1 after a quarter of play. Credit is due to the Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2), playing aggressively and making four saves in the period to Brynn Knight's three.
The game turned in the second quarter as the Pirates took command offensively, firing 13 shots in the period to Gardner-Webb's three, and converting six of them for goals. Two of those goals were the scorer's first career tally and they came on back-to-back scores by Madeleine Saucier and freshman Riley Matthiesen. Saucier's goal was the Pirate's fifth of the game and gave them the lead they would not relinquish.
Notably, the Pirates' first six goals of the game came from six different goal scorers before Kayla Wilkes was finally the first to register a second late in the first half.
The Pirates kept it rolling in the third quarter as the team began to simply dominate. Kayla Wilkes worked her way into her first career hat trick as she scored her third with five minutes left in the period. Wilkes went on to finish the day with five goals and four draw controls after posting five DCs in the season opener. Five goals places Wilkes just one off of the program record (6 by Ellie Bromley and Ally Stanton).
Caroline Kimel also began to take charge in the third as she posted a goal and two of her assists on her way to finishing with two goals and four assists. Kimel is up over 100 goals in her career and into second in program history in the category (she already has the record in points and assists).
Garder-Webb's lone goal of the third quarter came woman up with four seconds remaining in the period, taking the teams to the fourth with ECU leading, 11-5.
The Pirates continue the onslaught in the fourth quarter with six goals in the first seven minutes. In that run was an assist by freshman Sarah Goodison, the first point of her young career. The Runnin' Bulldogs finally ended the run with a goal under eight minutes remaining, but it was too little too late as ECU cruised to victory.
In goal, Jaime Behar got the start on the heels of being named American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week and did what was needed, making seven saves on 13 shots on goal. The Pirates posted a whopping 29 shots on goal as a team while leading in caused turnovers 11-5 and draw controls 15-11. Nine players recorded a point, eight recorded a goal and five recorded multiple goals.
JAMES MADISON 17, VIRGINIA TECH 5
HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 3 James Madison dominated both sides of the ball in a 17-5 victory over Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening at Sentara Park.
The Dukes (2-0) saw three players register hat tricks for the second consecutive game while going a perfect 20-of-20 during clear situations to defeat the Hokies (1-1).
Senior Isabella Peterson led the charge for the James Madison offense as she scored five times, achieving her second consecutive game with a hat trick, along with a team-high seven draw controls. Graduate student Kacey Knobloch scored four goals and tallied four assists, while senior Katelyn Morgan notched three goals and two assists. Olivia Mattis scored two goals for the Dukes off the bench.
Defensively, the Dukes were led by senior Lizzy Pirisino with two ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Nicholle Marshall caused two turnovers and added a ground ball. Sophomore Caitlin Boden allowed just five goals on 19 shots faced while making eight saves. She held Virginia Tech scoreless in the opening quarter.
Virginia Tech saw five goals from five different players, while sophomore Ella Rishko and graduate student Kayla Downey both added an assist to lead the Hokies with two points each. The Hokies' defense was paced by graduate student Molly Dunphey as she secured three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Junior Olivia Vergano secured seven of the Hokies' 10 draw controls.
MICHIGAN 14, CINCINNATI 4
CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Michigan inside Nippert Stadium Wednesday, 14-4.
Cincinnati set the tempo early with freshman midfielder Ally Keith scoring her first career goal as a Bearcat.
Sophomore attack Camryn Callaghan found the net with 0:29 left in the first half, her seventh goal on the season and is 4-for-4 on free-position goals.
Senior Lauren Ottensmeyer scored late in the fourth quarter to notch her fourth goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Julie Rose finished with three draw controls and two ground balls.
RICHMOND 19, OLD DOMINION 3
RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team fell to No. 20 Richmond, 19-3 on Wednesday at Robins Stadium.
Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game. Emma Arnold got the Monarchs (0-1) on the board cutting into the lead as she converted a free position attempt making it 2-1 with 11:23 to plat in the first. The Spiders bolstered their lead with seven more goals in the first quarter to take a 9-1 lead into the second. Richmond held ODU scoreless in the second period and pushed their lead to14-1 at the break.
ODU scored to start the third quarter when Megan Hopfenspeger scored her first career goal, but the Spiders found the back of the net for a 16-2 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes. Ella Bowen scored her first career goal with 13 minutes remaining in the game making 16-3. Richmond scored the final three goals taking the win 19-3.
