It was a 3-0 Wednesday for American Athletic Conference teams as Temple and Vanderbilt both remained unbeaten, while Old Dominion picked up its first win of the season.
OLD DOMINION 8, VCU 7
NORFOLK, Va. – Olivia Tannebeger scored the decisive goal with 1:30 left in the game as ODU defeated VCU, 8-7 on Wednesday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Lilly Siskind led the way for the Monarchs scoring three goals and assisting two more.
The Rams opened the scoring with a goal four minutes into the game but Siskind linked up with Sydney Taylor to tie the game with five minutes left in the first. ODU's lead was lost two minutes later as VCU then scored two minutes later and took a 2-1 lead into the second.
Old Dominion started quickly in the second period of play as Siskind scored two goals in the first four minutes. VCU answered with a goal of their own tying the game at three, but Siskind completed her hat trick at the 5:19 mark to give ODU a 4-3 lead at the break.
VCU tied the game to open the third quarter before Emma Arnold notched back-to-back goals giving the Monarchs a 6-4 advantage with four minutes remaining in the third period of play. The Rams opened the final quarter with a goal to cut into the Monarch lead but Megan Hopfensperger responded with her second goal of the year to put the Monarchs back up by two. VCU would take advantage playing with a man-up and score two goals to tie the game with seven minutes to go. The game winner was set up by
Taylor who found a cutting Tanneberger who ripped a shot into the top left corner. ODU would run out the remaining amount of time to hold on for its first win on the 2024 season.
Jenna Peccia made seven saves on the day while also causing three turnovers and scooping up eight groundballs.
TEMPLE 13, DELAWARE 8
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple lacrosse team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 13-8 win over Delaware on Wednesday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls' winning streak to start the season is their longest since 2013.
Program history was made in the first quarter as Katie Shallow broke Temple's career caused turnover record with her 99th. She finished the game with four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and three draw controls. Mackenzie Roth and Amelia Wright each netted a hat trick to lead the Owl offense.
Roth netted the game's first goal at the 11:02 mark, the lone score of the first quarter. The Owls defense locked things down early on, forcing eight Delaware turnovers and allowing only three shots on goal in the first 15.
Temple extended their lead to four with three quick goals in the second courtesy of Julie Schickling, Erin King, and Amelia Wright. The Blue Hens got on the board twice, but the Owls bounced back with scores from Maddie Barber and Belle Mastropietro before the half.
Temple outscored Delaware 4-3 in the third, with both teams trading goals. Roth (x2, Shickling, and Maeve Tobin scored for the Owls.
The Owls continued to extend their lead in the fourth, with one goal from Mastropietro and two from Wright leading the Cherry and White offense.
VANDERBILT 17, BUTLER 16
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Vanderbilt lacrosse earned its first road win of the season after a 17-16 decision over Butler on Wednesday afternoon. Brooke Baker powered the Commodores with five goals for the second consecutive game.
Vanderbilt (2-0) opened the game on a 4-0 scoring run before Butler (1-2) responded with five unanswered goals. The game had nine ties and five lead changes before the Commodores took the final lead off a free position goal with 3:42 remaining to seal the win.
Kemper Robinson finished with three goals, a career-best six draw controls and a game-high tying three caused turnovers. Freshman Anna Taraboletti posted her first collegiate hat trick, finishing with three goals on five shots, one ground ball and one draw control.
Junior Molly Finlay posted five points on four goals and one assist and added two ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover.
Butler’s Leah Rubino had five goals and two assists for seven points to lead the Bulldogs. Delaney Hudson added four points on four assists off the bench.
