FIU Leads Going into Final Day of 2024 American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

IRVING, Texas – FIU continues to lead after the third day of the 2024 American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas, Texas.
 
After three days, FIU leads with 523.5 points, followed by SMU (454), Rice (388), East Carolina (316), Florida Atlantic (279), Tulane (242) and North Texas (234.5).
 
Arielle Hayon from Rice broke the Championship record in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 51.38, breaking the previous record of 51.42, set by Marne Erasmus of SMU in 2017. Victoria Raymond of Tulane touched second in 51.70, while Valentina Becerra of SMU was third in 52.32.
 
FIU’s Nicole Frank repeated as the 400-yard individual medley champion in a time of 4:12.18. Rice’s Amelia Kane came in second in 4:13.50, while FIU’s Elizabeth Maradyn was third in 4:16.40.
 
Lucrezia Napoletano won the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight year in a time of 1:47.91. It is her fourth individual conference title overall. Bry Bellile of Florida Atlantic placed second in 1:48.19, while Emilee Hamblin was third in 1:48.40.
 
Christie Chue of FIU captured her second individual title of the meet, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.25. She won the 200 IM on Friday and it is her fourth individual title overall. East Carolina’s Kaylee Hamblin was second in 1:00.63, while Delaine Goll was third in 1:00.94.
 
In the 100-yard backstroke, Imogen Meers of Rice won in a time of 53.33, while SMU’s Jimena Leal was second in 53.55. Rice’s Naomi Filkin placed third in 53.95.
 
SMU’s Nicole Stambo captured the platform diving event with a score of 279.40, the second time she has won the event (2022) and her fifth individual conference title (1-meter in 2021-23). Frida Zuniga Guzman of East Carolina, the 3-meter champion, placed second with 256.35 points, while FIU’s Paige Burrell, the 1-meter champion, placed third with 241.20 points.
 
In the final event of the evening, the SMU team of Jimena Leal, Madeleine Lewis, Valentina Becerra and Johanna Gudmundsdottir won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:36.28. Rice placed second, just .08 seconds behind in 3:36.36, while FIU was third in 3:36.45. It is the fifth time the Mustangs have won the event, but first since 2017.
 
The meet continues Saturday, February 24, with swimming prelims at 11:30 a.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT, diving prelims at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. CT and finals at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
