No. 11 Florida extended its winning streak to 11 games - the longest active streak nationally - while Temple improved to 3-0 in American Athletic Conference play and Cincinnati held on for a thrilling win to highlight Saturday's action.
The Gators rolled to a 20-5 victory against Vanderbilt in Nashville. Florida trailed 3-2 in the first quarter, but outscored the Commodores 14-1 in the final three periods, passing the 20-goal mark for the eighth time in 10 games.
Temple extended its winning streak to three games as the Owls took a12-5 win against Old Dominion in Philadelphia. Temple held its opponent to single-digit goals for the eighth time in 11 games.
Cincinnati held a 6-1 lead early in the second quarter, but the Bearcats had to hold off East Carolina to take a 12-11 win at Nippert Stadium. Camryn Callaghan led the way with six goals, while Lauren Ottensmeyer had three goals for her 11th consecutive hat trick.
No. 9 James Madison fell to No. 10 Johns Hopkins 21-13 in Baltimore in a battle of top-10 teams to close out Saturday's action.
FLORIDA 20, VANDERBILT 5
NASHVILLE – The 11th-ranked Florida lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in AAC play, defeating Vanderbilt 20-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Gators improved to 11-2 on the season, while Vanderbilt dropped to 6-4 and 0-2 in AAC play.
For the first time this season, Florida did not score first and found itself trailing 3-2 in the first quarter. UF then used a 12-1 run before halftime, and outshot the Commodores 11-0 in the second quarter to create separation.
The Gators were led by Danielle Pavinelli, who scored a season-high five goals along with passing out two assists. Ashley Gonzalez had her third hat trick of the season, connecting on three goals and three assists for a season-high six points in the win. Nine other players scored, including a hat trick from Madison Waters, and two goals from Cate Isaacson. Emily Heller, Hannah Heller, Maggi Hall, Josie Hahn, Gabbi Koury Ava Tighe and Paisley connected on scores as well.
The ball stayed moving as Florida had 11 assists, their eighth straight game in double digits . Gonzalez and Hall had three each, along with two from Pavinelli and one each from Isaacson, Koury, and Falk.
It was another dominating performance for Liz Harrison and the draw team, as Harrison won 14 draw controls and Florida won the draw battle 21-6. This led to UF generating a lot of opportunities, as they out shot Vanderbilt 41-18.
Georgia Hoey moved to 11-0 on the year, along with seven saves from Elyse Finnelle. Florida caused six Commodore turnovers and held them to 5-of-18 shooting for the game and 1-of-12 after the first quarter.
TEMPLE 12, OLD DOMINION 5
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's lacrosse team won their third in a row and improved to 3-0 in the American with a 12-5 win over Old Dominion on Saturday at Howarth Field. Mackenzie Roth made history in the game, breaking Temple's all-time record with her 90th career assist in the third quarter.
The Owls went on an 8-1 run over the final 37 minutes to secure the victory. Roth and Belle Mastropietro each totaled four points in the game while Erin King and Maeve Tobin led the scoring effort with three goals apiece.
Tobin's hat trick was her eighth of her career and first this season. She's scored five times in the last two games. King recorded her first career hat trick, doubling her season total in goals in the process.
Roth finished with three assists, breaking Temple's career record with her first of the game. She added a goal to finish with four points.
Mastropietro finished with two goals and two assists. She has recorded 13 points (9g, 4a) in AAC play and has scored two or more goals in 18 consecutive games.
The Owls finished the game with 22 shots to ODU's nine and forced the Monarchs into 25 turnovers.
CINCINNATI 12, EAST CAROLINA 11
CINCINNATI – Sophomore Camryn Callaghan surpassed 100 career goals as Cincinnati defeated East Carolina, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon inside Nippert Stadium
The Bearcats improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the AAC with their second conference win of the year.
Before Saturday's game, Callaghan needed one goal to reach 100. She hit the milestone within the first minute of play. She became the first player to achieve 100 goals in under two years as a Bearcat. She finished with six goals, six points, five draw controls and 10 shots.
Senior Lauren Ottensmeyer finished with three goals, giving her 48 this season. She has recorded a hat trick in 11 straight games.
Cincinnati held East Carolina to two goals in the first half. Goals from Ottensmeyer and Lexie Wolfe extended UC's lead to five before ECU responded with 24 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Pirates opened up the second half with a 3-0 run that came to a halt thanks to three straight goals from Callaghan.
ECU got within one towards the end of the third quarter before Ottensmeyer found the back of the net for a clutch last-second goal.
The Bearcats bounced back with two late goals from Callaghan to seal the victory. Cincinnati's defense held strong claiming an 18-8 draw control advantage. Dani Mlkvy had eight draw controls to lead the way.
JOHNS HOPKINS 21, JAMES MADISON 13
BALTIMORE – No. 9 James Madison was unable to overcome a halftime deficit, falling short to No. 10 Johns Hopkins in a 21-13 loss on the road in Baltimore on Saturday.
Senior Isabella Peterson and redshirt junior Olivia Mattis led the Dukes' scoring efforts as each notched a hat trick. JMU saw five other goal scorers and four players register assists, including three from redshirt junior Maggie Clark and two from senior Katelyn Morgan.
Clark secured a game-high six ground balls while senior defender Lizzy Pirisino and freshman defender Ava Bleckley each tallied three. Clark and Pirisino each caused two turnovers while Peterson and sophomore midfielder Lauren Savage each caused one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Boden made 14 saves on 47 shots faced, allowing 21 goals and posting a .400 save percentage.
Johns Hopkins saw four players register hat tricks, including six goals from Ava Angello and four goals each from Maeve Barker and Campbell case. Three other Blue Jays found the back of the net. Bailey Cheetham notched five assists while seven other players recorded at least one assist on the day.
The Blue Jays' defensive efforts were led by Jordan Carr with five ground balls and Cheetham with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Madison Doucette made 12 saves on 30 shots faced, allowing 13 goals and posting a .480 save percentage.
The Dukes were outdrawn by a 23-13 margin. Jennifer Barry collected 13 of the Blue Jays 23 draw controls while sophomore attacker Maddie Epke and Peterson collected six and four, respectively, for the Dukes.
