Florida, James Madison, Temple, Vanderbilt to Battle for American Women's Lacrosse Championship

04.27.24

IRVING, Texas – After closing the regular season with a 15-game winning streak, including a 6-0 mark in conference play, Florida claimed the outright regular-season conference title and the No. 1 seed for the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship, which takes place May 2 and 4 at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ranked No. 10 in this week’s ILWomen-IWLCA poll, the Gators scored an 18-7 win against Temple Saturday, improving to 15-2 overall and bringing the nation’s second-longest active winning streak into The American Championship.

Florida won its fourth American Athletic Conference regular-season title in the five seasons of conference play and improved to 31-1 all-time in regular-season conference games in The American. The Gators have additionally gone 8-0 in The American Championship and have claimed all four tournament titles.

Florida will face No. 4-seeded Vanderbilt in the tournament opener May 2 at 5:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. CT. The Commodores picked up the No. 4 seed with a 14-9 win against Cincinnati Saturday. Vanderbilt is making its fourth appearance in The American Championship after the Commodores reached the championship final in 2022 and fell in the semifinals in 2019 and 2021.

Thursday’s second semifinal will pit No. 2-seeded James Madison against No. 3-seeded Temple at 8:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. CT.

The Dukes finished the regular season in second place in The American at 5-1 in conference games, 12-4 overall. James Madison was ranked No. 17 in last week’s ILWomen-IWLCA poll and finished as the runner-up in last year’s American Championship in its first year in the conference.

Temple went 9-6 overall and 4-2 in The American in the regular season. The Owls make their fourth American Championship appearance and will look for their first tournament win since 2021.

The 2024 Championship will be The American’s fifth postseason tournament in women’s lacrosse. Florida has won the first four conference tournament titles, defeating Cincinnati 15-9 in the 2019, topping Temple 19-4 in 2021, beating Vanderbilt 18-7 in 2022 and edging James Madison 9-8 last season. The 2020 tournament was canceled.

The semifinal games of The American Championship will be available on ESPN+, while Saturday’s championship final will be on ESPNU. The most up-to-date information on the tournament will be available on the conference’s Championship Central site.
