CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic defeated No. 7 seed Charlotte, 10-8, in an elimination game on Friday afternoon, May 24, at the 2024 American Baseball Championship presented by Regions at Bay Care Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla.
With the win, Florida Atlantic (28-28) advances to the semifinals on Saturday, May 24. The Owls will have to win two games against Tulane to advance to Sunday’s final. The first game on Saturday is scheduled 47 minutes after Wichita State/East Carolina at 9 a.m. Eastern on ESPN+. Charlotte concludes the season with a record of 24-34 in its first season in The American.
The Owls scored in each of the first four innings, including three in both the third and four frames, taking an 8-1 lead. The 49ers stormed back to cut the lead to 10-8 in the seventh.
Jake Millan hit home runs for Florida Atlantic in back-to-back innings in the second and third, one from each side of the plate. John Schroeder was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Sam Drumheller (3-0) was credited with the win for the Owls, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Kaden Hopson led the 49ers with two home runs and four RBI, while Dante DeFranco had two hits and three RBI.
Chase Carson (2-2) took the loss for the 49ers, allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work.
