Seven Former American Athletic Conference Student-Athletes Earn Olympic Medals in Paris

IRVING, Texas - Seven former American Athletic Conference student-athletes found themselves atop the medal stand at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The list was highlighted by the performance of the USA women's basketball team, which edged France for the gold medal in Sunday's final day of competition. Former UConn standouts Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier represented the USA atop the podium, while UConn's Gabby Williams won silver for France.

Stewart was a three-time (2014, 2015, 2016) American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and remains the most decorated player in NCAA women's basketbal lhistory. Collier earned The American's Player of the Year honor twice (2017, 2019). Williams took The American's Defensive Player of the Year honor in 2017.

Cincinnati had a pair of former American Athletic Conference standouts win silver medals. Jordan Thompson, the three-time American Player of the Year (2016, 2018, 2019)  in women's volleyball, led the United States to silver, while Annette Echikunwoke, who won eight American Athletic Conference individiual titles, was the silver medalist for the U.S. in the hammer throw.

Former Houston track and field star Shaun Maswanganyi, who won 11 American Athletic Conference individual titles in his career, helped South Africa to a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay.

The first medal by a former American Athletic Conference standout came in women's rowing, when Viktorija Senkute, who won four conference titles at UCF, claimed bronze in single sculls for Lithuania.
