No. 4 FIU Advances to Semifinals of American Men's Soccer Championship

MIAMI, Fla. — Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano scored the lone goal in the 65th minute as No. 4 FIU defeated No. 5 Missouri State 1-0 on Friday night in the opening round of the American Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at FIU Soccer Stadium.

Gilleard-Soriano’s first goal of the season came unassisted, breaking a scoreless deadlock midway through the second half (65'). The Panthers (7-8-2) held off the Bears (6-6-4) the rest of the way behind goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren, who made two saves to record the shutout.

Missouri State outshot FIU 8-7 and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, but the Bears could not convert several late chances. Jonathan Kliewer finished with one save in goal for Missouri State.

With the win, FIU advances to the American Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals to take on No. 1 seed Charlotte at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
