CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida – Bri Carrigan’s goal in the ninth minute of overtime earned No. 5 seed UTSA its first American Women’s Soccer Championship, defeating sixth seeded Rice, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon, November 9, at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
With the win, the Roadrunners (10-5-6) are the American’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will take place on Monday, November 10 at 4 p.m. Eastern on NCAA.com.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation, Most Outstanding Defensive Player Jasmine Kessler made two saves early in the overtime frame before Carrigan, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player, collected the ball near midfield and ran towards the Rice goal. Once she entered the Owl box, she fired off a shot with her left foot into the top left corner of the net to win the Championship.
UTSA led in shots, 19-13, and Kessler made five saves for the Roadrunners. Rice goalkeeper Kirsten Ruf recorded nine saves for the Owls (10-4-6).
