Just one day after South Florida introduced itself to the college lacrosse world with an impressive victory, Charlotte showed that it will be an immediate player as the 49ers throttled Gardner-Webb 20-2 in their inaugural game at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
The 49ers gained a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and carried a 12-0 lead into halftime as Charlotte finished with a 38-7 advantage in shots. Twelve players had at least one goal or one assist, while attacks Clarire Schotta and Kyle Gioia led the way with four goals each. Gioia, a transfer from Cincinnati, added a game-high three assists to figure in seven of the 20 goals.
Vanderbilt opened its season on the road and came away with an impressive 13-8 win against Cincinnati. The Commodores clung to a 9-8 lead after 45 minutes, but goalie Molly Joyce closed the door on the Bearcats in the fourth quarter, allowing Vanderbilt to pull away with a 4-0 run down the stretch.
East Carolina got Saturday's action started with a solid 12-8 win at Queens. The Pirates got five goals from Kayla Wilkes, while goalie Jaime Behar made eight saves. East Carolina built an 11-6 lead through three quarters and held off the Royals' late comeback bid.
