Army Stunned By Tarleton State In Two Overtimes

08.29.25

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Brad Larson kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift Tarleton State to a 30-27 upset win over Army on Saturday at Michie Stadium.

After Dawson Jones pulled Army even with a 40-yard kick in the first overtime, Tarleton State’s defense forced a missed field goal in the second extra period to set up Larson’s game-winner. The Texans (2-0) earned the win behind a balanced attack and a stingy defense that produced two interceptions.

Caleb Lewis rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Tarleton State, while Tre Page III added 89 yards and a score. Quarterback Victor Gabalis threw for 152 yards and a 17-yard touchdown to Dawson Hearne in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 24.

Army (0-1) built a 24-10 lead midway through the third quarter on a 37-yard scoring burst by Hayden Reed. Quarterbacks Dewayne Coleman and Cale Hellums combined for 237 total yards and three rushing touchdowns, including Hellums’ 1-yard plunge just before halftime that put the Black Knights up a touchdown.

The Texans answered with 17 straight points, highlighted by Lewis’ 6-yard TD run and Gabalis’ strike to Hearne. Larson’s 28-yard field goal in the first overtime gave Tarleton a brief lead before Army answered. His second kick proved the difference after Army’s Jones missed from 35 yards on the opening possession of double overtime.

Andon Thomas paced the Army defense with 14 tackles, but Kasyus Kurns’ two interceptions for Tarleton swung momentum late. Larson finished 3-for-3 on field goals.
