COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Malik Washington threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter and Maryland forced six interceptions on the way to a 39-7 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday at SECU Stadium.
The Terrapins (1-0) grabbed an early lead when linebacker Daniel Wingate returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown. Florida Atlantic (0-1) answered quickly as Caden Veltkamp hit Asaad Waseem for a 27-yard score, capping a 58-yard drive that tied it 7-7. From there, Maryland took control, scoring 26 points in the second quarter and adding two field goals in the third.
Washington finished 27 of 43 for 258 yards with scoring strikes to Shaleak Knotts, Kaleb Webb, and Dorian Fleming. Sean O’Haire kicked field goals from 49, 24 and 42 yards, and the Terrapins limited FAU to 77 rushing yards.
Florida Atlantic managed 354 yards of total offense and 23 first downs, but six interceptions stalled drives. Veltkamp completed 30 of 49 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown while Easton Messer led all receivers with 15 catches for 87 yards.
Hart Jr. recorded 11 tackles to pace the FAU defense. Maryland outgained the Owls 380-354 and held a 33-7 halftime lead before coasting through the final two quarters.
