09.13.25

DENTON, Texas — North Texas put together a dominant all-around performance Saturday, rolling past Washington State 59-10 at DATCU Stadium. The Mean Green is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2018.

Quarterback Drew Mestemaker was nearly flawless, completing 24 of 29 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, while backup Reese Poffenbarger went 5-for-5 in relief. The balanced North Texas attack also piled up 163 rushing yards, led by Makenzie McGill II’s 67 yards and a score, Jayden Becks’ two rushing touchdowns, and Cam Hawkins’ 50 yards with a TD.

The Mean Green defense was just as sharp, forcing five turnovers — three interceptions and two fumbles — that led to 28 points. Evan Jackson’s 60-yard interception return set up a short touchdown drive in the second quarter, part of a 28-point blitz that put the game away before halftime.

Washington State managed only 275 total yards, including just 64 on the ground, and didn’t find the end zone until the final two minutes. Quarterback Jaxon Potter threw for 139 yards but was intercepted three times.

North Texas scored on nine of its 10 possessions inside the red zone and averaged 6.5 yards per play, turning the afternoon into a showcase for its depth and efficiency on both sides of the ball.
