North Texas Rallies Past Western Michigan 33-30 In OT

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Makenzie McGill scored on a 3-yard run in overtime to lift North Texas past Western Michigan 33-30 on Saturday at Waldo Stadium.

After Palmer Domschke’s 48-yard field goal gave the Broncos a brief lead to open overtime, McGill answered on North Texas’ third play, bursting through the line for the winning score. The Mean Green (2-0) rallied from a 17-7 halftime deficit and forced extra time on Kali Nguma’s 25-yard field goal with 1:35 remaining in regulation.

Quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, hitting Terrell Williams III for an 18-yard score in the third quarter and Cameron Dorner from 4 yards early in the fourth. Kiefer Sibley added a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. McGill finished with 102 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Western Michigan (0-2) controlled possession for more than 36 minutes and outgained North Texas on the ground 216-182. Broc Lowry ran for two touchdowns and threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Jalen Buckley, who rushed for 112 yards and caught two passes for 51.

The Broncos led 27-17 early in the fourth after Domschke’s 43-yard field goal, but the Mean Green responded with back-to-back scoring drives to draw even.

Trey Fields had 11 tackles to lead the North Texas defense, while Ethan Wesloski added two tackles for loss. Rodney McGraw paced Western Michigan with 2.5 sacks.

North Texas outgained WMU 406-303, averaging 6.4 yards per play, and was a perfect 5-for-5 in the red zone.
