American Conference Week Six Football Postgame Notebook

IRVING, Texas - Home teams with 6-0 in American Conference play and has left four teams atop the league with perfect 2-0 records with two more also undefeated at 1-0. 

UTSA started things off with a 31-24 victory over USF on Thursday night. Then on Saturday, Army outlasted Tulane 20-17, East Carolina defeated Rice 28-12, UNT dismantled Charlotte 50-10, Navy took down Tulsa 34-26, Temple fell in a non-conference contest against UConn 34-20 and Memphis won back the Battle of the Bones with a 38-13 win over UAB.

Week Six American Conference Notes
  • Home teams went 6-0 in American Conference matchups in week six.
  • UTSA took down USF Thursday night and ran their record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, marking the best six-game start since 2021 (6-0) and their second 2-0 league start in four years in the American.
  • Josh McCown finished with 209 yards through the air for UTSA on 22-of-31 passing and 52 more on the ground to guide an offense that racked up 486 yards, including 277 rushing. 
  • Army got a game-winning FG from Dawson Jones as time expired to defeat Tulane 20-17 and win its second straight one-score American Conference game.
  • Army QB Cale Hellums recorded a career-high 223 rushing yards with a pair of touchdowns. Hellums had 38 carries, tied for the fifth-most in school history, matching his rushing attempts at Tulane a season ago.
  • ECU scored 21 straight points in less than eight minutes of game action at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter to take down Rice 28-12.
  • ECU RB TJ Engleman with 136 yards on 14 carries and scored his fourth touchdown in two games. With his second straight game eclipsing 100 yards, he now has 354 yards on 30 carries in three games after gaining 24 yards in just five attempts in the first two outings.
  • UNT took down Charlotte 50-10. The 40-point margin of victory was the largest for UNT in a conference game since a 49-7 win over FIU on Nov. 20, 2021, and the largest ever as a member of The American, besting a 38-point win over UTSA last season.
  • UNT QB Tayven Jackson finished 24 for 31 for 349 yards passing and five touchdowns. His five TD passes in a game is a new career high and the ties for third-most in single-game program history. 
  • Navy rallied from a 12-point second half deficit and outscored Tulsa 14-0 in the fourth quarter to pick up its first league win of the season 34-26 over Tulsa in Annapolis.
  • Navy QB Jackson Gutierrez carried the ball 41 times for 232 yards, the most by a Navy player since 2008, and completed five of seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. His 232 rushing yards were the most by a Navy player since 2019.
  • Tulsa had four different players with 10+ tackles against Navy in Dax Collins (13), Ashton Williams (11), Rylan Leathers (10) and Arias Nash (10) in the loss against the Midshipmen.
  • Memphis outscored UAB 28-0 in the second half to defeat UAB 38-13 and bring the Battle of the Bones trophy back to Memphis. They have scored at least 15 points in 88 consecutive home games. It is the second-longest active streak in the FBS and the fourth-longest streak overall since 1978.
  • Memphis extended their active streak of games with two or fewer turnovers to 35 games, the second-longest streak by an American Conference team, the longest active streak in the conference and 6th longest active streak in the FBS. 
  • Through week 6, Memphis, UNT and UTSA are atop the American Conference standings at 2-0 while Florida Atlantic and East Carolina are both 1-0 as well.
