UNT Wins Overtime Thriller in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — Tayven Jackson rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in overtime and North Texas stopped a game-winning two-point conversion attempt to escape with a 45-44 victory over Tulsa on Thursday night at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

After Jackson gave North Texas (3-2, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) the lead in the opening period of overtime, Tulsa answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Damari Alston. The Golden Hurricane (3-2, 0-1) chose to go for the win, but Oran Singleton was tackled shy of the goalline.

Jahiem White led the North Texas attack, rushing for a game-high 219 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries, including an 84-yard run in the third quarter. Jackson completed 24 of 39 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. Hayes paced Tulsa with 211 yards and three touchdown passes while adding two scores on the ground. Singleton was his primary target, catching 11 passes for 104 yards.

Tulsa built a 17-10 halftime lead behind a 4-yard scoring run by Hayes and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Javon Ross following a Mean Green fumble. North Texas dominated the third quarter with 21 unanswered points, taking a 31-17 lead on touchdown passes to Justin Stevenson and Kyle Koch alongside White’s 14-yard touchdown run.

The Golden Hurricane rallied in the fourth quarter, using two Hayes touchdown passes to David Wells Jr. and a 10-yard Hayes touchdown run with 31 seconds left in regulation to force overtime tied at 38-38.
