TAMPA, Fla. — Quarterback Ajani Sheppard ran for a 34-yard touchdown with 3:08 remaining to cap a 10-play, 96-yard drive and lift Temple to a 17-13 victory over South Florida on Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium.
Sheppard rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown while completing 9 of 14 passes for 92 yards and another score for the Owls (2-3, 1-1 American Athletic Conference).
South Florida (4-1, 1-1 American) took a 13-10 lead early in the fourth quarter on Nico Gramatica’s 49-yard field goal. Temple answered from its own 4-yard line, with Sheppard breaking free for the go-ahead touchdown. USF reached the Temple 40 on its final drive, but Mudia Reuben fumbled after a 22-yard catch, and Asa Locks recovered to seal the win.
Nico Gramatica kicked a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter for USF before Carl Hardin tied it with a 34-yarder early in the second. Temple built a 10-3 halftime lead on Sheppard’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Jojo Bermudez with 45 seconds left in the second quarter. USF leveled the game in the third quarter on D.J. Crowther's 1-yard touchdown run.
Crowther finished with 68 rushing yards for USF, while Michael Van Buren Jr. threw for 205 yards. Hunter Smith added 69 rushing yards for Temple.
