IRVING, Texas – The American Conference has announced the weekly baseball honors for the first week of the regular season.
Player of the Week
Jayson Jones, Sr., 3B, Wichita State
Jones helped lead the Shockers to a 4-game sweep of Northern Colorado by hitting .467 (7-15) with nine runs scored, four home runs and 12 runs driven in. The senior had multiple runs scored and multiple RBI in each game, and he homered in all four contests as well.
Pitcher of the Week
Riley Miller, R-Fr., UAB
Miller came into the season-opening game for the Blazers against No. 13 Florida tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The redshirt freshman recorded three scoreless innings against the Gators and earned the win in a 10-inning 9-7 victory.
Honorable Mention
David Case, Gr., P, Memphis
Earned the win in the rubber match of a series against Toledo, tossing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and two runs allowed.
JC Davis, Jr., INF, Rice
Hit .636 (7-11) with four runs scored, a double, three home runs and four RBI in a series win over Northwestern.
Jevin Relaford, Sr., INF, South Florida
Hit .500 (3-6) with three runs scored, two doubles and three RBI in a series win over Illinois.
Josh Arquette, So., INF, UTSA
Hit .714 (5-7) with two doubles, one home run and four RBI in a sweep of South Dakota State.
Johnny Nuanez, Jr., P, Wichita State
Earned the win in 5.0 innings without an earned run and five strikeouts in the second game of the series with Northern Colorado.
