04.28.26

IRVING, Texas – Wichita State junior Xin Tong Wang has been selected as the 2026 American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches.

Tulsa's Carolina Alonso earned Freshman of the Year honors, while Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt was named the American Conference Coach of the Year.

A native of Hangzhou, China, Wang becomes the first player in Wichita State program history to earn Player of the Year recognition. She posted an impressive 18-7 singles record during the 2025-26 season, competing exclusively at the No. 1 position and closing the year on a 12-match winning streak. In doubles action, Wang tallied 23 victories alongside partner Giorgia Roselli, with the duo competing at the No. 1 spot throughout the season.

Alonso is the second player in Tulsa history to be named Freshman of the Year, joining Ksenia Laskutova (2015). The Cordoba Veracruz, Mexico native compiled a 23-11 overall singles record, including 17 wins during the spring season. She also made an immediate impact in doubles play, contributing consistently to the Golden Hurricane lineup.

Schmidt earned Coach of the Year honors for the first time after guiding Rice to its first American Conference championship. Entering the 13-team tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Owls defeated both the No. 2 and No. 1 seeds on their way to capturing the title.

Wang and Alonso were among the 12 student-athletes named to the 2026 All-Conference Team. Wichita State led all programs with three selections, as Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli joined Wang on the list. Charlotte, Rice, and Tulane each placed multiple student-athletes on the team, while North Texas, Memphis, and Tulsa each had one selection.
