Chuck Sullivan was promoted to his current position of assistant commissioner for communications for the American in January of 2015 after he originally joined the Big East Conference in August 2007 as director of communications.
Sullivan oversees the communications and external operations for the American and its 20 Division I sports. He is responsible for strategic planning, brand development, social and digital media prominence, content creation, proactive and reactive media relations and direction of staff and external vendors. He is the conference's primary spokesperson and serves as a liaison between the American and member schools' administrators, coaches and communications professionals.
Sullivan serves on the media coordination staff for the College Football Playoff National Championship and has served in a similar capacity with the NCAA Final Four and the BCS National Championship.
Before coming to the American, Sullivan served as director of athletic communications at Harvard University from 2003-07, where he managed the external and internal communications efforts for the nation’s largest intercollegiate athletics program - numbering 41 varsity sports and more than 1,500 student-athletes. He was involved in the planning and administration of a number of high-profile events, including the 2006 NCAA Women's Final Four, the Beanpot hockey tournament and the annual Harvard-Yale football game.
Sullivan also served as assistant director of athletics for communications at Bryant College from 1999-2003, where he was a member of the athletics department’s senior leadership team. He was sports information director at the University of Massachusetts Boston from 1995-99 and served as an athletic communications assistant at Princeton University from 1993-95.
Sullivan's publications have been recognized with numerous awards, including a Best In The Nation Award, three Best Cover Awards, three Second In The Nation Awards and three Third In The Nation Awards.
Sullivan is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in broadcasting and film. He currently is an ex-officio member of the board of directors of the Football Writers Association of America, has served on the Academic All-America Committee of the College Sports Information Directors of America and has been a regular presenter and panelist at regional and national conventions.
