PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four American Athletic Conference Players were honored with Player of the Week accolades for the first week of the 2015 women's soccer season. UConn’s Rachel Hill earned the Offensive Player of the Week award, while USF’s Cristina Ferral was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. Saundra Baron of East Carolina has been recognized as the Goalkeeper of the Week, and Temple’s goalkeeper Jordan Nash received the Rookie of the Week honor.
Junior forward Hill recorded five points with two goals and one assist in the Huskies’ regular season opener against Colgate. Hill scored her first goal in the 28
th minute, with her second in the 51
st minute. She assisted UConn’s third goal of the game, in their 4-1 victory over the Raiders.
Defender Ferral scored the first goal of the Bulls’ match against Baylor, to give USF a 1-0 lead in the 62
nd minute. She also assisted the game-winning goal in double overtime. The Bulls’ defense allowed the Bears just one shot in overtime.
Baron, the Pirates’ senior goalkeeper, recorded six saves and two shutouts over the weekend. Baron had four saves in East Carolina’s 2-0 win over George Mason and two saves in the 0-0 (2OT) draw with Loyola-Chicago. Baron played all 200:00 between the two games.
Nash tallied two saves after she replaced senior goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff in the 85
th minute of the Owls’ match against Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) on Friday. The freshman had two quick saves which helped preserve a 3-0 shutout when FDU took a penalty kick and attempted a last second shot in the 90
th minute.
