CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 1 seeded USF Bulls are set to host No. 2 Memphis in the title match of the 2018 American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET, inside Corbett Stadium. The game will air on ESPNU at 2 p.m. ET.
** due to expected thunderstorms in the Tampa area, the championship match time was pushed up to noon ET. The game will air in its entirety on ESPNU in its regularly-scheduled 2 p.m. ET time slot **
It will be a battle of nationally-ranked teams as USF enters at No. 16/11 while Memphis is 19/18 in the latest United Soccer Coaches/TopDrawerSoccer.com Top-25 polls.
USF (14-2-0) reaches its fourth title match in six seasons and now boats two more championship game appearances than any other American program. The Bulls defeated No. 4 ECU, 2-0, in the semifinals on Friday.
Memphis (16-3-0) gets to its first American Championship game with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 UCF.
Something will have to give on Sunday as the Bulls enter the match a perfect 10-0-0 at home while Memphis has not lost away from its home pitch with a 10-0-0 mark of their own on the road.
No American Athletic Conference Championship field has ever gone by seed with at least one upset in each of the past five years. The No. 1 seed has made the final match three times and won the championship twice with the last time coming in 2016 (UConn). The No. 2 seed has made the title game twice, with the Bulls winning as the two last season.
Though neither USF nor Memphis has played an overtime game this season, expect a close match as four of the past five championships have gone to double overtime and penalty kicks while the lone regulation match was decided, 1-0.
The game will be star-studded with USF boasting the Offensive Player of the Year (Evelyne Viens), Midfielder of the Year (Andrea Hauksdottir) and Coaching Staff of the Year. Memphis has the Defensive Player of the Year (Olivia Gauthier) and more First Team All-American Conference selections than any other team. Both Memphis four first, two second, one rookie) and USF (two first, three second, two rookie) had seven players honored.
USF won the only matchup between the two teams this season in mid-October at Memphis, 2-0.
ESPNU's broadcast features Glenn Davis (play-by-play), Morgan Conklin (color) and Hali Oughton (sideline) on the call.
