Houston, Cincinnati Continues To Lead Through Day Two



DALLAS – Houston holds first place in the six-team women’s competition after day two of events with 299 points, followed by Cincinnati (257), ECU (237), SMU (204), UConn (203) and Tulane (145). The four-team men’s field is led by Cincinnati with 296 points, followed by ECU (259), UConn (233) and SMU (219).
 
In the 500-yard freestyle, SMU’s Johnathan Gomez established a pool record with a time of 4:19.26, surpassing his own previous mark of 4:30.21 this season. On the women’s side, Houston's Zarena Brown (4:44.59) took the top spot to earn 20 points for the Cougars.
 
Cincinnati sophomore Claire Schuermann completed a first-place performance in the women’s 1-meter diving event. Schuermann tallied a score of 261.45 for her first gold of the championship. Second place went to UConn’s Erin Clifford (259.90) and third to Kathryn Crown (254.75).
 
The gold medal in the men’s 200-yard individual medley went to Cincinnati’s Dominic Polling. The freshman posted a pool record and covered the distance in 1:46.07 for the win. Houston junior Eleanna Koutsouveli earned gold in a close women’s 200 IM.  Koutsouveli (1:58.68) touched the wall just before teammate Peyton Kondis (1:59.75) to earn the top-spot for the Cougars.
 
The ECU 200-yard freestyle relay team posted a first-place time of 1:31.24 as John Myhre, Magnus Andersen, Gustavo Santos and Gavin Erdmann earned 40 points for the Pirates. On the women’s side, ECU earned a come-from-behind win. The squad of Catherin Johnson, Brigid Burke, Logan Graumann and Tori Angermeier reset the pool record with a time of 1:32.24.
 
Nicholas Badsky of SMU finished atop the podium in the men’s 50 free with a first-place time of 20.13. ECU’s Gustavo Santos was runner-up, followed by Cincinnati’s Alex Fortman with the bronze. Cincinnati’s Katherine Gob took first-place in the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.80. The junior touched the wall just .19 faster than the second-place finisher Erin Trahan of SMU.
 
Competition continues Friday, with preliminary swimming events starting at 10:00 am CT, followed by diving preliminaries at 1:00 pm CT. The finals are scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm CT.
