SMU and Tulane Move to 2-0 in Tuesday's Action

Seven American Athletic Conference men's basketball were in action Tuesday night (Nov. 12) and SMU and Tulane both improved to 2-0 on the season. In addition, Houston won its season opener and Tulsa picked up its second win of the season.

Appalachian State 68, East Carolina 62 - Box Score

BOONE, N.C. (AP) Justin Forrest had 22 points as Appalachian State topped East Carolina 68-62 on Tuesday night.

Forrest shot 10 for 11 from the line, all in the second half when the Mountaineers were 17 of 21. Nine of their last 11 points in the final 3:07 came from the line. They were 3 of 7 in the first half but went 6 of 13 from 3-point range.

Adrian Delph had 19 points, 14 in the first half, for Appalachian State (2-1).

Seth LeDay had 20 points for the Pirates (1-2). Brandon Suggs added 12 points. Jayden Gardner had 11 points.

Houston 84, Alabama State 56 - Box Score

HOUSTON (AP) Marcus Sasser scored 14 points off the bench and Houston breezed to an 84-56 victory over Alabama State in the Cougars' season opener on Tuesday night.

Quentin Grimes had 13 points for Houston, while Dejon Jarreau and reserve Justin Gorham scored 11 apiece. Fabian White Jr. pitched in with 10 points and six rebounds.

Tobi Ewuosho scored a career-high 23 points for the Hornets (0-3). He added a team-high six boards.

Houston shot 52% from the floor and sank 9 of 22 from 3-point range (41%). Alabama State made just 35% from the floor and 33% from distance.

SMU 77, New Orleans 64 - Box Score

DALLAS (AP) Isiaha Mike scored 22 points as SMU beat New Orleans 77-64 on Tuesday night.

Tyson Jolly added 20 points for SMU (2-0) and Feron Hunt had 14 points and 13 rebounds for his second career double-double.

Troy Green scored a career-high 20 points for the Privateers (1-2). Damion Rosser added 14 points. Gerrale Gates had 12 points.

Tulane 88, Jackson State 79 - Box Score

NEW ORLEANS – Teshaun Hightower led all scorers with a career-high 21 points and Christion Thompson had a personal-best scoring night with 19 more as Tulane defeated Jackson State, 88-79, at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
 
Hightower shot 5-for-10 from the field and 10-for-11 at the free throw line to go with six rebounds and three assists, while Thompson was 7-for-12 overall to go with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a pair of steals.
 
K.J. Lawson chipped in 14 points, five boards and four helpers, while Kevin Zhang scored 12 points.
 
The Green Wave (2-0) shot 30-for-54 (.556) overall on the night and made 22 of 30 (.733) at the free throw line.

Tulsa 74, Oral Roberts 67 - Box Score

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Brandon Rachal had a career-high 24 points as Tulsa beat Oral Roberts 74-67 on Tuesday night.

The Golden Hurricane shot 53% from the field (27 of 53), including 4 of 13 from beyond the 3-point arc. Rachal shot 9 for 12 from the floor. Defensively, Tulsa held Oral Roberts to 32.8% (22 of 67).

Lawson Korita had 13 points for Tulsa (2-1). Isaiah Hill added 12 points. Martins Igbanu had 11 points for the hosts.

Kevin Obanor had 13 points for the Golden Eagles (1-2). Max Abmas added 12 points. Elijah Lufile had 10 points.

Miami (Fla.) 79, UCF 70 - Box Score

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Kameron McGusty scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Harlond Beverly had 15 points, and Miami beat UCF 79-70 on Tuesday night at Addition Financial Arena.

The Hurricanes (2-1) pulled away in the early stages of the second half with a 14-2 run over a span of 4:16. Beverly, who scored seven of his team's 14 points during the decisive run, punctuated it with a floater in traffic to give the visitors a 52-41 lead.

UCF (1-1) never managed to get back within fewer than six points. The Knights were their own worst enemy at times, as they committed 17 turnovers and shot only 42 percent (5 of 12) from the free-throw line.

For UCF, Frank Bertz and Darin Green, Jr. each scored 13 points.

No. 14 Oregon 82, No. 13/15 Memphis 74 - Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Shakur Juiston had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 14 Oregon held off No. 13 Memphis 82-74 in the inaugural Phil Knight Invitational on Tuesday night.

Payton Pritchard added 14 points and six assists as the Ducks collected their third straight win to open the season.

James Wiseman had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers. Memphis (2-1) was led by Lester Quinones with 16 points.

Oregon was hurt with 5:12 to go in the opening half when starter Chris Duarte had to be helped off the court with what appeared to be a knee injury. He started the second half but quickly went back to the bench.

The Ducks led by as many as 12 points in the second half but Memphis closed to within 65-61 after Quinones' fast-break layup capped an 8-0 run. Francis Okoro answered with a layup for the Ducks.

Pritchard's 3-pointer put Oregon up 70-63 with 4:53 left. Wiseman's jumper got the Tigers back within four points at 71-67 but Will Richardson's 3 extended the lead again for the Ducks.

Pritchard sunk another 3-pointer with 1:32 left that made it 77-69 and Memphis could not catch up.
