USF Advances to NCAA Championship Second Round

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—USF women’s soccer went on the road and defeated Florida, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in Gainesville, Fla. Out in Pullman, Wash., Memphis fell to Washington State, 1-0.
 
Evelyne Viens of USF (15-4-0) broke The American single-season record for goals after scoring a hat trick against the Gators. Viens scored late in the first half in the 43rd minute, before scoring twice early in the second in the 52nd and 55th minutes. Viens now has scored all seven of the Bulls’ goals in the postseason, including four in The American Championship. Viens has 23 on the season, breaking the previous conference single-season record of 21 set by UConn’s Stephanie Ribeiro in 2016.
 
After Deanna Rose scored for Florida in the 61st minute, Fanny Pelletier-Laroche scored an insurance goal for the Bulls in the 84th minute. Georgia Eaton-Collins scored a minute later for the Gators, but that was as close as they would get.
 
With the win USF advances to the second round on Friday, Nov. 22 to face No. 4 Washington, who defeated Seattle, 1-0, on Saturday (Nov. 16). The USF/Washington winner will face the winner of No. 1 Florida State and Brown on Sunday, Nov. 24. Both the second and third rounds will be played in Tallahassee, Fla.
 
American regular season champion Memphis (17-3-1) fell to Washington State, 1-0, on a 62nd minute goal by Makamae Gomera-Stevens. The Tigers were outshot, 16-4, and Elizabeth Moberg made six saves for the Tigers.
