American Men's Basketball Goes 4-0 on Opening Day

The American Athletic Conference won all of its men's basketball games on the opening day of the season for the second straight season, capturing four wins Wednesday (Nov. 25). The American won all seven games on the opening day of the 2019-20 season.

USF, No. 17/18 Houston and SMU all picked up home wins, while Memphis advanced to the semifinals of the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D., and will take on Western Kentucky on Thanksgiving Day at Noon Eastern on ESPN.

USF 94, Florida College 84 - Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — David Collins had 17 points as USF defeated Florida College 94-84 on Wednesday in a season opener.

Justin Brown had 15 points for USF. Jamir Chaplin added 14 points and seven rebounds. Michael Durr had 11 points.

Jalon Perry had 28 points for the Falcons. Matt Simpson added 16 points. Ladarron Cleveland had 12 points and seven assists.

Memphis 73, Saint Mary's 56 - Box Score

Boogie Ellis had a career-high 24 points as Memphis beat Saint Mary’s 73-56 on Wednesday at the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic.

Ellis hit 6 of 7 from 3-point range.

Landers Nolley II had 11 points for Memphis (1-0). Damion Baugh added 10 points. Moussa Cisse had 10 points.

Matthias Tass had 15 points for the Gaels (0-1). Alex Ducas added 10 points. Kyle Bowen had eight rebounds.

No. 17/18 Houston 89, Lamar 45 - Box Score

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston coach Kelvin Sampson described the Cougars’ play in their season opener as the holy trinity of their program — defend, rebound and take care of the ball.

The Cougars used that combination to cruise to victory.

Marcus Sasser scored 25 points, Tramon Mark added 22 points and eight rebounds and No. 17 Houston beat Lamar 89-45 on Wednesday.

Sasser shot 9 of 11, including 7 of 9 on 3-pointers.

Jarreau had nine points and eight rebounds, and Quentin Grimes chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

The Cougars, who entered the season ranked for the first time since starting the 1983-84 season at No. 3, shot 42% from the field. Houston finished 13 of 33 on 3-pointers and outrebounded the Cardinals 49-34. Houston had nine turnovers.

Anderson Kopp scored 15 points and Avery Sullivan added eight points and seven rebounds to lead Lamar. The Cardinals shot 30%, including 1 of 13 on 3-pointers.

Playing in front of a 25% capacity crowd, the Cougars started slowly before finishing the first half on an 18-4 run to take a 35-15 lead into halftime. Sasser scored nine of his 19 first-half points during the run.

The Cardinals got no closer than 15 in the second half.

The Cougars were playing without preseason American Athletic Conference player of the year Caleb Mills, who sat with an injury. Houston forced 22 turnovers and eight blocks and had a 37-9 advantage in bench points.

Sampson said Mills could have played, but he had made the decision earlier in the week to sit the sophomore.

Sampson notched his 640th career win, moving him into a tie for 44th on in NCAA history with Homer Drew. Sampson is one win behind Billy Tubbs. Sampson also coached his 200th game at Houston and is 140-60 with the Cougars.

SMU 97, Sam Houston State 67 - Box Score

Kendric Davis scored a career-high 33 points to lead four Mustangs in double figures as SMU defeated Sam Houston State, 97-67, at Moody Coliseum. 

The Mustangs shot 40.7 percent from the field while holding the Bearcats to 29.6 percent shooting. Davis was 11-for-15 from the field, including three 3-pointers, while going 8-for-8 from the line. 

William Douglas had 15 for SMU, while Ethan Chargois and Charles Smith IV added 12 and 11, respectively.

Zach Nutall had a game-high 36 for the Bearcats.
