American Athletic Conference Announces 2022 Women’s Soccer Honors

11.02.22

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its 2022 women’s soccer honors, as chosen by the league’s head coaches.

Two student-athletes repeated as individual award winners. Senior Ashley Barron of Cincinnati was named The American’s Defensive Player of the Year for the third-consecutive season, while UCF redshirt senior Caroline DeLisle was selected as the Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight year.

Senior Kristen Scott of UCF was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while SMU graduate student Courtney Sebazco was picked as the Midfielder of the Year. Jazmin Ferguson of East Carolina was selected as the Rookie of the Year.

UCF’s coaching staff, led by head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak, was named the Coaching Staff of the Year. Temple earned the league’s Team Fair Play Award.

Scott, the first Knight to be named Offensive Player of the Year since Morgan Ferrara in 2017, leads The American with 21 points and nine goals.

Barron led the Bearcat defense to seven shutouts, second in The American. The senior is the first player in The American to earn an individual award in three consecutive seasons and the third to earn three year-end awards. Rachel Hill of UConn was the Midfielder of the Year in 2016 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015 and Evelyne Viens of South Florida was the Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019 after being the Rookie of the Year in 2016.

Sebazco started all 16 regular season games for the Mustangs in the middle of the park and recorded three goals and three assists. Sebazco is the second Mustang to earn an individual award after Claire Oates was Rookie of the Year in 2014.

DeLisle led The American with nine shutouts, an 83.9 save percentage and a 0.67 goals against average. It was the fifth time the Knights have had the Goalkeeper of the Year (Vera Varis in 2017 and 2018, Connie Organ in 2014).

Ferguson anchored the Pirate defense that finished third in the league in goals allowed. She was the second straight Pirate to be named Rookie of the Year (Haley McWhirter in 2021).

Roberts Sahaydak and the Knights went undefeated through conference play (7-0-1) and finished league play with seven consecutive victories. Roberts Sahaydak was named Coach of the Year three times (2013, 2014 and 2017) before the award was changed to Coaching Staff of the Year in 2018.

Temple earned the Team Fair Play Award for having the lowest amount of fouls, yellow cards and red cards. It is the first time the Owls have won the award.

UCF had the most first-team all-conference selections with four. Barron was named to the first team for a fourth-consecutive season, while Mya Jones of Memphis was selected for a fourth time and third as a first-team member.
