IRVING, Texas – Tulane men’s basketball player Sion James has been named as the Chair of the American Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the conference announced its 2022-23 SAAC Executive Board.
 
James, who enters his junior year at Tulane in 2022-23, will additionally serve as The American’s representative to the NCAA Division I SAAC, which reports directly to the NCAA Division I Council. One of only 32 student-athletes on the NCAA Division I SAAC, James is the first men’s basketball player and the first student-athlete from Tulane to serve as The American’s national representative.
 
South Florida softball player Vivian Ponn will serve as Vice Chair of The American’s SAAC. The 2022-23 SAAC Executive Committee also will include Houston’s Anna Economon, a golf student-athlete who will be Coordinator of Student-Athlete and Alumni Engagement; Kiran Kaishankar, a track and field standout from Memphis who will be Coordinator of Community Engagement; and a pair of student-athletes from Temple. Field hockey player Emma Nesbit will be Coordinator of Public Relations, while football player Wisdom Quarshie will be Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion.
 
The American Student-Athlete Advisory Committee serves as the voice of student-athletes who represent the conference’s 12 member institutions. The mission of the conference SAAC is to improve communication for all student-athletes at each member school and enhance communication between the institutions. SAAC takes an active role in understanding and providing feedback regarding NCAA and American Athletic Conference legislation and promotes student-athlete well-being, academic achievement, personal development and community service.
