IRVING, Texas – The 2023 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Monday through Saturday (February 13-18) at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas. SMU is hosting the championship meet for the third consecutive season.
Live coverage of the American Swimming and Diving Championships will be available on ESPN+ for all nine sessions. Prelims for diving on Monday and Tuesday will begin at noon Eastern with finals starting at 7 p.m. ET. Wednesday will have diving prelims at 1 p.m. ET followed by finals for platform diving and two swimming relays at 6 p.m. ET. Swimming prelims will begin at 11 a.m. ET Thursday through Saturday, and finals will start at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Chris Mycoskie, Brendan Gulick, Smacker Miles and The American’s Morgan Uber will be providing coverage on ESPN+ for each finals session.
In addition to returning members Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, SMU and Tulane, new affiliate members Florida Atlantic, FIU, North Texas and Rice will be competing for the women’s championship, while Cincinnati and SMU will battle for the men’s title.
At the 2022 championship meet, Houston’s women won their sixth consecutive American crown, while the SMU men captured the title for a second year in a row with 1,298 points. The Cougar women defeated the SMU women by a half of a point, 866.5-866, the smallest margin of victory in the championship’s history.
Four individual award winners from last year’s meet are scheduled to compete this year, including Michael Balcerak of Cincinnati (Most Outstanding Male Swimmer), Peter Smithson of SMU (Most Outstanding Male Diver), Nicole Stambo of SMU (Most Outstanding Women’s Diver) and Cotton Fields of SMU (Men’s Swimming Freshman of the Year).
Colin Feehery of SMU comes into the meet ranked 12th in the nation in the men’s 200-yard individual medley in 1:43.45, 14th in the 400 IM in 3:43.82 and 18th in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke in 1:53.17. Cincinnati’s Hunter Gubeno ranks 22nd in the nation in the men’s 200-yard backstroke in 1:41.47, while fellow Bearcat Joleigh Crye is 23rd in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke in 59.57.
On the women’s side, SMU comes in seeded first in The American in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, while the FIU squad has the top time in the conference in the 800 free relay. Rice has the top times in the conference in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. On the men’s side, Cincinnati is seeded first in the 800 free relay, while SMU has the top time this season in the other four relays.
