Houston Women, SMU Men Lead After Day 5 of American Swimming and Diving Championships

DALLAS, Texas – Two more meet records went down on the fifth day of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Friday, February 17 at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas.
 
After 15 events on the women’s side, Houston leads with 972 points, but FIU has closed the gap to 15 points and has 957 points. SMU is third with 863 points, followed by Rice (789), Cincinnati (586), East Carolina (505), Florida Atlantic (417), North Texas (364) and Tulane (283). On the men’s side, SMU leads Cincinnati, 899-772.
 
Three men earned their second individual event wins of the meet, including Cincinnati’s Michael Balcerak and SMU’s Colin Feehery and Lance Butler, while Lucrezia Napoletano captured her second individual event on the women’s side.
 
FIU won the women’s 400 medley relay in a time of 3:36.67 with Kelsie Campbell, Christie Chue, Oumy Diop and Harliai Curthoys-Davies. Rice finished second in 3:36.50, while SMU was third in 3:38.82.
 
In the men’s 400 medley relay, the SMU side of Riley Hill, Feehery, Russell Exum and Butler won in a time 3:08.94, ahead of Cincinnati, which finished 3:12.94. Butler captured the 100 breaststroke in 53.15 for his second individual win. His SMU teammates Joe Rusnock (53.48) and Evan McCormick (53.62) placed second and third, respectively.
 
Feehery broke his second Championship record of the meet, capturing the men’s 400 IM in 3:42.99, taking down the previous record of 3:43.97, set in 2017 by Jonathan Gomez of SMU. Cotton Fields of SMU finished in second in 3:45.60, while Spencer Sehlhorst of Cincinnati placed third in 3:48.54.
 
Napoletano finished first in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.19, just ahead of Rice’s Lauren McDougall in 1:46.55. Zoe Spitz of Rice placed third in 1:47.37. Later in the evening, Spitz won the 100 backstroke in 52.80, ahead of her Rice teammate Iomgen Meers in 53.72. Cincinnati’s Lily Jones placed third in 54.24.
 
Balcerak captured the 100 butterfly in 46.72, ahead of Exum (46.82) and SMU’s John Easton (47.17). In the women’s 100 fly, Rice’s Arielle Hayon finished first in 52.01. SMU’s Luana Alonso (52.08) and Valentina Becerra (52.80) were second and third, respectively.
 
Cincinnati’s Joleigh Crye led three swimmers under the minute mark in the women’s 100 breaststroke, winning in a Championship-record time of 59.07. Chue placed second in 59.28 and Houston’s Henrietta Fangli was third in 59.96.
 
FIU’s Nicole Frank-Rodriguez started off the finals session by winning the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:14.53. Amelia Kane of Rice’s was second in 4:18.39, while SMU’s Frederica Kizek finished third in 4:19.12.
 
Bearcat Hunter Gubeno won the men’s 100 backstroke in 47.64, while Hill was second in 47.80 and SMU’s Rob McCall was third in 48.49.
 
SMU’s Sage Sungail finished first in the men’s 200 freestyle in 1:36.18, while his teammate Jack Forrest was second in 1:37.56 and Cincinnati’s Calvin Coetzee placed third in 1:37.64.
 
The championship concludes Saturday, February 18 with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. Eastern and finals will start at 6 p.m. Eastern.
