PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference honored four players representing two different schools as weekly award honorees on Monday. Louisville’s Ricardo Velazco was named Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Jimmy Ockford was awarded Defensive Player of the Week. Temple’s Dan Scheck earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors, while fellow Owl Robert Sagel was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
Louisville sophomore Ricardo Velazco was named Offensive Player of the Week after becoming the first Cardinal this season to score two goals in a match this season as he led the No. 17 Cardinals to a 2-0 win over SMU on Sunday night. The midfielder tallied both goals in a span of less than four minutes early in the second half of the victory. He now leads Louisville and is tied for the conference lead with five goals and 14 points. Velazco also has four assists on the season, the second most in the league.
Senior Jimmy Ockford was named Defensive Player of the Week. He was a key stopper on the Louisville back line as the No. 17 Cardinals earned two more shutouts last week to set a school record for consecutive shutouts with five. Ockford helped Louisville extend its school record for consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal to 518 after leading the Cardinals in a scoreless draw at Ohio State, followed by a 2-0 shutout victory at SMU. This is Ockford’s second award this season.
Temple goalkeeper Dan Scheck earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the second time this season. Scheck made 11 saves in the two games, stopping seven shots in a double-overtime game that saw the Owls tie No. 24 UConn 1-1. Scheck followed that performance with a shutout in a 2-0 win over Drexel, making four stops.
Robert Sagel was named Rookie of the Week after leading the Owls to 1-0-1 record on the week. The defenseman was instrumental against No. 24 UConn, as the teams earned a 1-1 draw. Sagel was a vital contributor defensively before scoring the game-tying goal in that match, heading in the equalizer in the 78
