The American Today: Memphis, Cincinnati Pick Up First League Win

Memphis and Cincinnati picked up their first league win while UConn and Rutgers remained undefeated in conference play during women’s basketball action around The American on Saturday.

Memphis had four players score in double figures in their first league win. Ariel Hearn paced the Tigers in the 88-52 victory over UCF Saturday afternoon at CFE Arena. Pa’Sonna Hope had 18 points while Breigha Wilder-Cochran added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sara Djassi (15 points) and Andrea Hines (10 points) led the Knights in scoring.

Jeanise Randolph had her sixth double-double of the season (22 points, 11 rebounds) in the Bearcats’ 59-50 win over Houston. Cincinnati held off a second-half rally from UH to pick up its first conference win. The Cougars were paced by a career-high 21 points from Te’onna Campbell.

 UConn improved to 5-0 in conference play with an 80-36 win over Temple Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena. The Owls stayed with UConn early, trailing by one-point after a trey by Feyonda Fitzgerald with 12:48 remaining in the first half, but the Huskies went on an 11-2 run after that and led 39-22 at the break. Erica Covile had a team-high 13 points for Temple. The Owls held a 42-39 advantage in rebounds. UConn was paced by Bria Hartley’s 19 points. Kiah Stokes pulled down a  career-high 18 rebounds off the bench.

Rutgers defeated SMU 64-54  at the RAC in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Scarlet Knights won its ninth straight game and eighth consecutive game at home in the process. SMU was held without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the second half.  RU got a game-high 16 points from freshman Tyler Scaife. The Mustangs were paced by Keena Mays’ 15 points.  

USF hosts No. 5/5 Louisville on Sunday in the final conference game of the week. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. eastern on ESPNU.
