PROVIDENCE, R.I. - UConn earned the 2014 American Athletic Conference men’s soccer regular-season title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the American Men's Soccer Championship presented by ProHealth Physicians, the league announced on Saturday.
Championship quarterfinals action will take place on campus sites on Nov. 8 while the semifinals and title match will be held Nov. 14 and 16 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. All eight league teams will compete for the championship title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Tournament seeding is based on points accumulated through league play.
No. 1 UConn (9-6-2, 6-1-1 American) clinched the conference regular-season title outright with a 1-0 win over No. 25/NR USF on Saturday. The Huskies open tournament play at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday versus No. 8 Temple.
No. 2 Tulsa (9-5-2, 5-2-1 American) opens tournament play at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday versus No. 7 Cincinnati. The Golden Hurricane tied UCF 1-1 (2OT) in their regular season finale on Saturday.
No. 3 SMU (9-5-2, 4-2-2 American) defeated Cincinnati, 2-0, on Saturday to clinch the tournament's third seed. The Mustangs will open tournament play on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT vs. No. 6 UCF.
No. 4 USF (9-7-1, 4-3-1 American) dropped its regular season finale to UConn, 1-0, and will face No. 5 Memphis in the tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Bulls are ranked 25
th in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Coaches Poll released on Oct. 28.
No. 5 Memphis (9-6-2, 3-4-1 American) clinched the fifth spot at the conference championship with a 1-0 win over Temple on Saturday. The Tigers open tournament play on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at No. 4 USF.
No. 6 UCF (2-9-5, 1-3-4 American) will face No. 3 SMU in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT in Dallas. The Knights tied Tulsa 1-1 (2OT) in their final league game of the season.
No. 7 Cincinnati (5-9-3, 2-5-1 American) wrapped up its regular season on Saturday with a 2-0 loss at SMU. The Bearcats will face off with No. 2 Tulsa in quarterfinals action on Saturday (7 p.m. CT).
No. 8 Temple (2-13-2, 1-6-1 American) opens tournament play on Saturday vs. No. 1 UConn. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. ET in Storrs, Conn.
