The American Today: Rutgers Evens Series with Memphis, UCF Snaps Eight Game Skid

No. 5/5 Louisville won its 15th straight game, Rutgers evened the season series with Memphis and UCF picked up its first home conference win of the season during weekend action around The American.

Tia Gibbs scored a game-high 19 points for Louisville in the Cards’ 79-59 win over USF on Sunday. It was the 15th straight win for Louisville, who tied the program’s longest win streak with the victory. Akila McDonald’s double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) paced the Bulls.

Rutgers improved to 7-3 in conference play with a 66-48 win over Memphis on Saturday. Rachel Hollivay led the Scarlet Knights with 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. Freshman Mooriah Rowser had a team-high 14 points off the bench for Memphis.

Stephanie Taylor had a career and game-high 19 points for UCF in a 52-43 victory over Houston at CFE Arena. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Knights. The Cougars got a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds from Yasmeen Thompson.

Keena Mays scored 30 points for SMU and Akil Simpson added her eighth double of the year (23 points, 12 rebounds) in the Mustangs’ 85-75 win over Temple on Saturday. Tyonna Williams led the Owls with 18 points, including a career-high six three-pointers.

Cincinnati had an early lead over UConn in the first half of Saturday’s game, but the Huskies used a 22-0 run to put the game away. The Bearcats were held to a season-low 29 points in the 86-29 loss at Fifth Third Arena. Jeanise Randolph, Alyesha Lovett and Jasmine Whitfield each scored eight points apiece for Cincinnati. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Bria Hartley scored 17 points each for UConn.    

Four games highlight the conference schedule on Tuesday. Louisville travels to UCF, UConn hosts SMU,  Cincinnati battles Rutgers in Piscataway and Temple faces Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion.
