The American Today: Rutgers, SMU Advance to WNIT Second Round

Rutgers and SMU each picked up WNIT First Round wins on Thursday. The Scarlet Knights defeated Delaware while the Mustangs topped Texas Southern.

Four of RU’s starters finished the night in double figures led by American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Tyler Scaife with 22 points. Betnijah Laney pulled down her 14th double-double of the year (10 points and 12 rebounds) while Kahleah Copper added 15 points.

Rutgers will host Harvard in second round play on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.

Keena Mays had 32 points, including five three-pointers, in SMU’s win over Texas Southern. It was the first postseason win for the Mustangs since the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Korina Baker dished out a season-high eight assists, while Akil Simpson chipped in 15 points.

SMU will play at Minnesota in the second round of the WNIT on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.

USF, Rutgers and SMU were all selected to the WNIT.

After just missing its second NCAA Tournament bid in the last two seasons, USF was chosen for the WNIT for the eighth time in school history. The Bulls will host North Carolina A&T on Friday, March 21 at the Sun Dome. It was the 10th postseason berth in the last 11 years for USF.

Overall top-seed UConn and No. 3 seed Louisville were selected to the field of 64 teams that will compete for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
 
UConn, the American tournament and regular-season champion, is the No. 1 seed in the Lincoln Regional. The Huskies will face SWAC champion and No. 16 seed Prairie View A&M in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. UConn is seeking its ninth NCAA Championship title.
 
Louisville opens tournament play in Iowa City against No. 14 Idaho on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN. The Cards are making their 17th NCAA appearance and ninth appearance in 10 seasons. Louisville advanced to the Sweet 16 three times and to the Final Four in 2009 and 2013.
