The American Today: UConn Clinches Inaugural American Regular-Season Title

UConn clinched the inaugural American Athletic Conference regular-season title, Temple pushed its win streak to two games, USF secured the No. 3 seed at the conference tournament with a win over Rutgers, and Memphis followed suit with a win over Cincinnati for the No.7 seed during women’s hoops action on Monday.

No. 1/1 UConn defeated No. 3/3 Louisville 68-48 in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The victory helped the Huskies close out the regular season unbeaten at 31-0 and 18-0 in conference play. Breanna Stewart had 22 points and 14 rebounds while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Tia Gibbs had a team-high 16 points and Sara Hammond added 12 points and six rebounds.

Temple defeated Houston 66-54 in its senior-day contest at McGonigle Hall. Feyonda Fitzgerald and Natasha Thames each added 16 buckets and Erica Covile chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds in the Owls’ win. Marche’ Amerson had 20 points and Yasmeen Thompson added a double-double—10 points and 15 boards, in the Cougars’ loss. 

Courtney Williams and Alisia Jenkins each had double-double performances in their 60-51 win over No. 24/RV Rutgers at The RAC. Williams had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Jenkins added 10 points and 13 rebounds in the Bulls’ win. Syessence Davis led the Scarlet Knights with 12 points and seven boards and Rachel Hollivay had 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Memphis defeated Cincinnati 53-47 at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Ariel Hearn led all scorers with 24 points and six rebounds. Alyesha Lovett led Cincinnati with 14 points. Jeanise Randolph finished with nine points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats.

During Tuesday’s lone matchup, SMU handed UCF a 79-67 loss at Moody Coliseum. Keena Mays led all scorers with 26 points, Korina Baker put in 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Akil Simpson added a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds, for the Mustangs’ win. Zykira Lewis had 21 points and Andrea Hines had 11 points and six rebounds for the Knights in the loss.

All 10 teams gear up for the American Athletic Conference Championship at Mohegan Sun Arena on March 7-10. No. 9 UCF matches up against No. 8 Cincinnati in game one of the first round Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. and No. 10 Houston faces No. 7 Memphis in the second game at 8 p.m.

In game one of the quarterfinals, No. 5 SMU takes on No. 4 Rutgers at Noon on Saturday, March 8. No. 1 UConn matches up against the first round’s game 1 winner at 2 p.m., No. 2 Louisville takes on the game two winner at 6 p.m., and No. 6 Temple plays No. 3 USF at 8 p.m. in the last matchup of the night.
