Goodwin, Kennedy Named to Karl Malone Watch List

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the 20 watch list members for the 2016 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, and The American has two players named to the list in Memphis' Shaq Goodwin and SMU's Markus Kennedy.

Goodwin, the 2014-15 American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award recipient, ranked second in league play in field-goal shooting (61.1-percent) last season and averaged a career-high 7.1 rebounds. The senior pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds vs. Temple on Feb. 7, 2015 and set a new American Athletic Conference single game record with the mark.

Kennedy was the 2015 American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the 2015 American Championship. He averaged 11.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game and shot 54.8-percent from the field in 2014-15. SMU went 27-7 last season, winning the American regular season and championship titles en route to reaching the NCAA Tournament.

Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its second year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

By mid-February, the watch list for the 2016 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.  The winner of the 2016 Karl Malone Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s from Club Nokia in Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday, April 8, 2016.
