UCF Sets School Records on Opening Day of Spring Fling

No. 20/20 UCF set two school records at the UCF Spring Fling while USF and Tulsa each swept a pair of games during softball action around The American on Friday.

It took just one inning for UCF Softball history to be made as the Knights topped Monmouth, 8-3, Friday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex. With her second strikeout of the game, senior Mackenzie Audas became the program's all-time leader, passing Allison Kime with 848 career strikeouts. Senior Kahley Novak's stolen base in the bottom of the first gave her sole possession of the UCF career record with 103 thefts as a Knight. Audas went on to break Kime's record for most appearances, as the Plant City, Fla., native's start in the 10-2 win over Fairfield was the 130th appearance of her career.  The Knights went on to defeat Fairfield 10-2 (5 innings) in the nightcap on Friday.

USF posted two shutouts on Friday and ran their win streak to 15 games with wins over Iowa State and Boston University. The Bulls gave up four combined hits in the 2-0 win over the Cyclones and the 8-0 (5) win over the Terriers. Erica Nunn tossed five hitless innings in the opener vs. Iowa State while D’Anna Devine and Lee Ann Spivey each went 2-for-3 at the plate. The Bulls recorded eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to the run-rule win over Boston U. Astin Donovan extended her hit streak to 10 games with an RBI single to get the scoring started and five consecutive hits followed as the Bulls built a seven-run lead.

Julie Kernen had four RBIs, and Jodi Edmiston and Erica Sampson each drove in three runs to lead Tulsa past Mississippi Valley State (MVSU), 18-3 (5) Texas Tech, 11-1 (5) Friday afternoon at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field. Edmiston and Sampson tallied three RBIs in the win over MVSU, and Kernen drove in four runs on a pair of two-run home runs to lead the Golden Hurricane (14-7) past Texas Tech. Against Mississippi Valley, seven players in the Golden Hurricane lineup scored twice and five batters drove in at least two runs. Nine of Tulsa’s 11 runs against Texas Tech came on home runs. Kernen launched HRs in the first and fourth innings, Shelby Estocado hit a two-run homer in the second, Kaitlin Allen followed with a two-run shot in the third, and Jocelyn Sheffield hit a solo shot in the fifth.

UConn opened play at the 2015 San Diego Classic II with a split against UNLV and Utah Valley at Sportsplex USA field in San Diego. The Huskies picked up their seventh win of the year with a 3-2 victory over UNLV before dropping a close 4-3 decision to Utah Valley in game two. Lexi Gifford scored the go-ahead run for the Huskies in the second inning vs. the Rebels after starting the frame out with a double down the right field line.

Memphis defeated Marist 7-5 in nine innings to open the College of Charleston Invitational on Friday. The game was the first in 10 days for the Tigers, who have battled weather for the majority of the early season. It also marked the first extra-inning game for the team this season. Lindsay Crowdus tied a career-high with four hits. The sophomore went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, reaching base in all five plate appearances. The Tigers finished 1-1 on the day and fell 6-1 to New Mexico in the nightcap.
