Memphis Sweeps Doubleheader in Home Opener; UConn Defeats San Diego State

Memphis swept a midweek doubleheader against Belmont and UConn topped San Diego State on the road to highlight softball action around The American on Tuesday.

The Tigers defeated the  Bruins in their home opener at the Tiger Softball Complex, winning 8-6 and 9-1 in five innings. Memphis improved to 9-12 on the season with the two wins while Belmont fell to 5-16. The Bruins scored two runs in the opening game on a two-run double by Chelsey Deloney before the Tigers responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sami Jo Schulz hit a bases loaded triple in the inning. It was her first career triple, and she finished the game with a career best four RBIs. Memphis had seven hits and no errors in the second game of the series. Molly Smith picked up the win in the circle and shut out Belmont for four innings.

USF softball has now won 20 of its last 21 games after sweeping Tuesday night’s doubleheader against Hartford and Canisius at USF Softball Stadium. The Bulls used two complete-game shutouts from Sam Greiner and Erica Nunn to improve to 28-8 on the year. The two pitchers allowed only six base runners combined in the two games as USF outscored Hartford and Canisius 17-0.

UConn had a season-high 14 hits en route to a 11-4 win over San Diego State Tuesday night at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 8-13 while the Aztecs fell to 17-11. The 11-run effort marked the most runs the Huskies have scored in a single game since April 14, 2014 (12 vs. Hartford). Additionally, five different Husky players recorded multi-hit games in the win. UConn has outscored its opponents, 21-13, in the first inning and is 5-4 when putting at least one run on the board in the game's opening frame.

Houston dropped  a pair of games at No. 13 Baylor, falling 9-4 in game one and 8-4 in game two in a doubleheader in Waco, Texas. Senior catcher Kris Davila led the Cougars as she went 3-for-3 in game two of the doubleheader. She recorded her first home run of the season and fifth of her career, bringing in three runs.
