The American Today: UCF, Tulsa Win in League Opening Games

UCF and Tulsa won a pair of games to open conference play at 2-0 and UConn continued play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Stockton, Calif., to highlight softball action around The American on Saturday. USF and Houston will play a two-game series on Sunday after Saturday's games were rained out.

No. 20/20 UCF picked up a conference-opening doubleheader sweep at East Carolina on Saturday. The Knights won the opening game 2-0 before posting an 8-0 win in game two at ECU Softball Stadium, improving to 28-5 overall and 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference. Shelby Turnier earned her 13th win of the season in the circle in the first game, tossing a one-hit complete game. She tied her season-high with 13 strikeouts. The Knights took a 3-0 lead early in the second game and would not relinquish the lead. Mackenzie Audas struck out eight batters for UCF and allowed three hits in six innings of work in the circle. The two teams will square off in the final games of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.

Home runs by Julie Kernen, Erica Sampson and Brittany Walker helped lead Tulsa to a doubleheader sweep of Memphis, 2-1 and 8-0 (5), Saturday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex. Each HR went for multiple runs, and senior Bailey Erwin (9-4) tossed 6.0 shutout innings in Game 1, followed by a two-hit shutout from freshman Emily Watson (5-2) in game two. The Hurricane Hurricane (18-10, 2-0 American) was victorious in its first-ever American Athletic Conference games. The Tigers fell to 9-14 overall and 0-2 in American Conference play wit the losses. Walker’s two-run home run gave Tulsa a 2-1 lead in the second inning of the series opener, and the Hurricane held on for the win. Kernen’s two-run shot and Sampson’s three-run HR propelled the offense in the second win.

UConn 7, Pacific 4


UConn picked up a split against Cal State Northridge and Pacific on day two of the 2015 Louisville Slugger Invitational, played in Stockton, Calif. The Huskies fell to the Matadors, 8-0, in five innings before bouncing back with a 7-4 victory over the Tigers in the nightcap. UConn stands at 9-17 in the 2015 campaign and will round out tournament play against Grand Canyon on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. ET.
