The American Today: Second Consecutive No-Hitter for Turnier, USF Defeats Tulsa in Tampa

UCF pitcher Shelby Turnier had a second consecutive no-hitter and USF took two from Tulsa during softball action around The American on Saturday.

UCF junior Shelby Turnier added back-to-back no-hitters to her resume as UCF earned a pair of 2-1 wins over UConn Saturday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex. The Knights improved to 32-5 (5-0) with the wins while the Huskies fell to 10-19 and 0-2 in The American wih the losses. Turnier fanned 12 batters with one walk in a complete-game effort to open the weekend the same way she closed last weekend’s series at East Carolina. The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Samantha McCloskey double before the Huskies added a run of their own in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 2-1. Linnea Goodman scored the game-winning run for UCF in the fifth inning of game two on a RBI single by Farrah Sullivan.

Memphis played the second longest game in school history as they split a doubleheader games with East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference home opener for the Tigers on Saturday. Memphis took the opening game 5-4 in 12 innings before the Pirates responded with an 8-1 victory in the game two. The Tigers moved to 12-16 (1-4 American) after the pair of games, while East Carolina is now 9-26 (1-4 Aamerican). Cierra Mangum did walk-off honors for Memphis in the first game with an RBI double, scoring Kyler Trosclair. Senior Jordan Richwood went a career-high 12 innings in the circle and struck out 11 batters. Lindsay Crowdus continued to get on base for the Tigers and extended her reached-base streak to 20 games, one off of the school-record of 21 that Lelani Bernardino set in the 2013.

Senior Karla Claudio finished the day with three home runs and nine RBIs to lead USF to two wins over Tulsa Saturday afternoon in the Bulls' home opener in Tampa, Fla. Claudio had a grand slam in the seventh inning of game one to send it to extra innings and a walk-off HR to give USF (30-10, 2-2) the win in game two. USF rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game, capped by the game-tying grand slam by Claudio to extend the game to extras. D'Anna Devine (USF) registered a career-high four hits and scored two runs in the win. Claudio went 2-for-2 with five RBIs in game two. The Bulls trailed by a run heading into the seventh inning before Kassandra Moeller started the rally with a leadoff double in the second game.
