Back on the field for the first time since February 21, the Golden Hurricane softball team split their opening doubleheader at the New Mexico State Round Robin.
In the afternoon opener, Tulsa blanked North Dakota 9-0 on the strength of a late game rally. Entering the fourth inning locked in a 0-0 tie, Tulsa tallied two runs on a pair of RBI doubles by Catherine Horner and Brittany Walker.
In the fifth inning, Hurricane freshman Kate Myers slugged her first career homerun to center field, knocking in two RBIs. In the next at bat, Erica Sampson doubled and then scored on an RBI single from Maggie Withee. Capping the rally, Catherine Horner contributed again with an RBI double scoring Withee.
Withee ended the game in the sixth with her first career homerun, a three-run bomb that scored Shelby Estocado and Sampson.
Caitlin Still pitched a complete game (6 innings) for her third win of the season, giving up four hits and a walk against seven strikeouts.
In the days’ second game, Tulsa fell to host New Mexico State 8-0 at the NMSU Softball Complex.
New Mexico State posted one unearned run in the first thanks to an RBI double by Malena Padilla. The Aggies plated three runs in the fourth on back-to-back doubles, and Lacey Rother drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth to make the score 5-0. The 14-7 Aggies scored for the last time in the sixth on a three-run homerun by Tatum Reedy.
On the Golden Hurricane side of the field, sophomore Maggie Withee was 2-3 with a pair of singles and was joined in the hit column with singles by Catherine Horner and Brittany Walker and a double by Maddie Withee.
Senior Baily Erwin (5-2) took the loss, pitching 4 innings, striking out five and allowing three eraned runs.
Tulsa will play rematches of both of these games on Saturday, taking on North Dakota at 1:00 p.m. MT and New Mexico State at 3:00 p.m.
