Senior right-handed pitcher Lauren Duggan led UConn to their third straight win in a 5-0 shutout against Hartford Tuesday afternoon at Hartford Softball Field. Duggan’s no-hitter against the Hawks marked the 37th in program history, as well as the first since May 2, 2009. She became the 18th Husky player to accomplish the feat, while also advancing into a tie for third place in The American with nine wins this season.
The Huskies put up a score in the third after junior SS Lexi Gifford’s RBI single drove in freshman Emma Stanley. Gifford was thrown out at second on a steal attempt, but Alyssa Gardea helped extend UConn’s lead to 2-0 with a solo home run. It was Gardea’s fourth homerun of the season, and third in three games. UConn added three more runs onto the score with two on and one out in the fifth inning, as senior Emily O’Donnell’s fifth homerun of the season gave the Huskies a 5-0 advantage.
UConn, now 15-23 overall, will host in-state rival Central Connecticut State at Burrill Family Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. Conference play will resume with a trip to Houston over the weekend, where the Huskies will face the Cougars (19-23 overall) in a three-game series. The first pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled at 2 p.m. CT.
